Turkey calls for start of negotiations on EU membership
The Turkish Foreign Minister, Ismail Cem, urged the EU to set a start date for accession negotiations with Turkey. In his address to the Europe-Turkey Foundation conference in Brussels on 25 March, Mr Cem stated that the knowledge that negotiations could start as early as the end of 2002 would "guide the efforts" of Turkey.
