Prodi addresses EP governance concerns

Commission President Romano Prodi addressed the concerns of MEPs about the proposals contained in the White Paper on European Governance in a speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 2 October. He rejected claims that the Commission was looking for a 'blank cheque' to perform its executive tasks without any democratic scrutiny. Instead, he spoke directly to the parliamentarians by emphasising repeatedly in the speech that one of the key aims of the governance white paper was to give legitimacy to the EU by strengthening the role of the EP.
