China hat einen Gesetzesentwurf vorgelegt, der einen Militäreinsatz ermöglichen würde, sollte Taiwan die Unabhängigkeit ausrufen. Dies erhöht den Druck auf die EU, das Waffenembargo gegen China aufrechtzuerhalten.

Transatlantic tensions over the EU’s planned lifting of the arms embargo against China are likely to be fuelled by China’s 8 March move to clarify its intention to use military force if Taiwan declares its independence. 

Even if the anti-secession draft law remains vague on detail and partly states what was expected, it is the first time a proposed law actually allows the use of force against Taiwan.

In the event of a showdown, the US, which remains Taiwan’s main arms supplier, fears a confrontation that would involve the US facing European defence technology.

The Liberal Group in the European Parliament is organising a public hearing on the EU-China arms embargo on 9 March.
